October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and highlight ways to support recovery and long-term health. While regular screenings are crucial, many women benefit from additional support through physiotherapy and movement.

The Role of Physiotherapy

Recovering After Breast Cancer Surgery

Bea Francisco, registered physiotherapist providing arm mobility and other treatment to a breast cancer survivor post-surgery

After breast cancer surgery, it is common to experience arm swelling (lymphedema), reduced range of motion, pain, or fatigue. Physiotherapy can play a key role in helping women recover from surgery by:

  • Managing swelling and lymphedema

  • Improving range of motion and strength

  • Reducing pain and discomfort

  • Supporting energy levels, return to daily activities and overall wellness

Our physiotherapists can also teach safe exercises to rebuild mobility and confidence, helping patients return to the activities they love.

Staying Active for Prevention and Long-Term Wellness

Rob Sullivam, registered physiotherapist leading a client in exercise to improve overall health and well-being and prevent cancer

Exercise is one of the most effective tools for improving overall health and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. Even light movement can have big benefits.

Activities such as walking, stretching, yoga, or light resistance training help:

  • Lower estrogen levels

  • Boost immune function

  • Enhance energy and mood

The goal is to move regularly and safely, and a physiotherapist can help you design a program that fits your comfort level and recovery stage.
